Super Mobile Tricks ( You Never Seen)

1. Translate text using the camera
Not only is your Lumia’s camera a powerful photographic weapon, it can also be used in other ways, such as translating text into 39 languages. Press the Search (magnifying glass) button and then click the eye icon. Point your Lumia at your subject and click ‘scan text’. If you’re capturing in your native tongue, you’ll be presented with a list of languages to translate to. If you scan text in another language, it will automatically translate to your native tongue. Neat, huh? Results aren’t 100% accurate, but it will always give you a good idea of what’s being said. Handy for restaurant menus. And helping your kids with their homework…
2. Type quicker with shortcuts
This tip is unlikely to free up hours of your time, but it will make your keyboard finger-pecking faster while composing an email, SMS, OneNote entry or suchlike. Rather than pressing the numeric or punctuation buttons to enter their respective modes, then choosing your desired digit or mark, then tapping the button you first pressed to get you back into the standard keyboard, just press and hold the numeric/punctuation button and slide your finger over to the number or mark you want to use. Release your finger and the keyboard will snap back into default keyboard mode. Ninja skill unlocked.
3. Identify music, magically.
Simple to do, yet hugely powerful, this neat feature will tell you the name of the artist and track currently playing in your environment. Just click the Search button, then the music note icon, and point your Lumia at the tune. Unless you’re listening to an obscure trip-funk record that sold seven copies to a clowder of cats in 1989, you’ll be presented with the artist, the track and a link to buy the music from the Windows Phone Store. Great for finding out music from TV/radio adverts and public spaces.
4. Customise your web browser address bar
Getting to your favourite websites quickly is essential on any device, let alone a smartphone. So try this nifty trick to create a shortcut button right from the Internet Explorer web browser bar. Go to Settings > Applications > Internet Explorer and select ‘favourites’ from the ‘Use address bar button for’ drop-down list. You can also choose ‘tabs’, which will bring up the tab view of your saved sites, or keep it as the default stop/refresh button.
5. Respond to a phone call with an SMS
Just about to close that business deal? Kids pouring spaghetti hoops into the DVD player? Having your ear bent by great-auntie Jean? There are many occasions in life when taking a mobile phone call just isn’t convenient. So use a built-in feature to send your caller a text message rather than picking up. Just ‘slide up’ on any call that comes hit and press the ‘text reply’ button. Then choose a default message or create your own. To edit your responses, got to Settings > Applications > Phone and click the ‘edit replies’ button to create up to four bespoke answers.
6. Let people know you’re running late
There could be myriad reasons for your belated arrival to a meeting: my homework ate my dog, for example, but pre-warning attendees about your tardiness is trickier. Unless, however, you use your Lumia’s built-in Calendar feature that will email your plight to all meeting participants. Just dive into the Details section of any event and click the icon that looks like a human escaping the advances of a horizontal bar graph. The default response is “I’ll be a bit late, but I’m on my way. See you soon” but you can edit this before sending. To something more creative, we hope.
7. Magnify your screen
If, like many of us, your birthday signifies not only another year of wiseness, but an increase in eye-squinting when reading, you might want to check out the Ease of Use settings on your Lumia. Go to Settings > System > Ease of Access and choose to; activate high contrast for better clarity, increase text size (in a number of areas) and/or turn on the Screen magnifier, which means you can double-tap to zoom into and pan around things.
8. Activate voice commands
This couldn’t be easier. Just press and hold the Windows button to initiate the feature, press the speak button and then bark at your Lumia. There are a number of voice commands to perform specific tasks (you can find a selection of them here), but once mastered you’ll find it useful as well as pretty cool. You can also use the voice-command feature to dictate an email. Just tap the Speak (the microphone icon) button when in the body copy area of a message and babble away.
9. Automatically backup your Lumia photos with SkyDrive
With the amount of snaps we take with our phones, knowing that they’re in a safe place is essential. Our advice? Use a cloud storage service as backup. For Lumia users, SkyDrive is superb – as soon as you take a shot, it’ll appear in your SkyDrive Pictures folder. Just follow our super guide to a lifetime free of sleepless nights. You’ll get 7GB of free space, with the option of adding more as and when.
10. Multi-task like a boss
The shortest tip here but one that, if you’re not already aware of, you’ll use the most. Hold down the Back button (left-pointing arrow) on your Lumia to bring up the multi-tasking screen and swipe to choose your required app. Or click the cross in any top-right corner of the app to close it. Et voila.
11. Unify your mail boxes
Are you one of those types with an email address for everything? Don’t worry, we are too. That’s why this next tip will make light work of checking all of your inboxes at once. And it’s super easy, too. Just open one of your email accounts and bring up the menu (tap the button with three dots). Then tap Link Inboxes to choose another account to unify with. You can link as many or as little as you wish and give your linked Inbox its very own name, if preferred.
12. De-clutter your contacts
Your People hub is a great place to keep tabs on all of your contacts, no matter whether they come from a SIM card, email address book or social networking sites Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. However, they can get out of control. Freshen up by filtering your contacts. Go into your People hub and click the menu button. Then tap Settings > Filter my contact list. Within this option is the ability to select the accounts that you want to display contacts from. Go on, a bit of life laundry never hurt anyone.
13. Pin “deep links” to your Start screen
Creating a colourful, up-to-the-minute, informative Start screen full of Live Tiles is one of the standout Windows Phone features for your Lumia. However, it’s not just apps and websites that can be pinned. Prepare to go much deeper than that. You can, in no particular order, pin map places, MixRadio mixes, directions, documents, people, songs, contacts. Whenever you see the Pin icon, you know you’re in business. Simples.
14. Finally…
To end this crack list, we want to know two things:
What tips, tricks, hidden features and secrets can you share with Nokia Conversations and our community? Post in the comments below and we’ll pick the best for a follow-up story. Your name in lights, so to speak.
Who can tell us what function the globe icon performs in the A-Z app picker list (see screenshot)? The prize for a correct answer? Adulation from your peers.

Success is relative. For me, success was reaching 50,000 subscribers (which is currently more than Oprah has). For you, success might be something completely different – and that’s perfect. If you start judging your own level of success by somebody else’s metrics, you’re setting yourself up for failure. Have goals, but let them be YOUR goals. Set your own bar, and then set out to jump it.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine what video is worth. You’ll be enhancing, not undermining, your other Internet endeavors if you push your efforts to YouTube. If given a choice between watching something or reading about it, I’ll readily admit that I’d rather sit back in my chair and view a video than scan notes for more information. If you’re going to put a series of videos on YouTube, regular ol’ still-shot sequences are… yesterday’s news. Nothing demonstrates a product better than an actual demonstration.

Buy good cameras. This point should go without saying, but I’m surprised at just how many videos I’ve seen (on YouTube or beyond) that just weren’t watchable. Heck, even I’ve uploaded videos that I’d consider sub-par! I’ve experimented with a variety of devices, and am continuously looking at newer, better solutions for my efforts. Make the best with what you’ve got, but if you can get better – go better. In some cases, a regular ol’ Webcam will be sufficient. How does it look to YOU? Now, how does it look to OTHERS? Let me put it to you this way: nobody has ever complained about a video looking too good.

High resolution = higher quality. While it’s okay to record in a standard 4:3 format, 16:9 (widescreen) is not going away anytime soon. If you can record your videos in high definition, do it. 1280×720 pixels is the “HD” resolution that YouTube will host for you. The good news is that you can record in this size without spending much more than a couple hundred dollars these days – it’s quite affordable, and the results should speak for themselves.

What hue are you? Every camera should be color calibrated – be wary of any kind of automatic settings! It’s not likely that your webcam has a “white balance” feature in the software controls. If you’re using a camcorder, digital camera, et al, then there should be a “white balance” setting somewhere.

Keyboard Fast Typing Tricks

Keyboard Tricks

As you can imagine, one of our passions here at Das Keyboard is for really fast typing. We love that Das Keyboard has helped so many people to improve the speed and accuracy of their typing skills and we’re always looking for ways to help more. I came across a great post by David Turnbull with his 9 tips for How to Type 100+ Words Per Minute. These are quoted directly from his site:

Feel the location of keys. If you can’t feel the location of keys whilst typing slowly then you won’t be able to type fast. Close your eyes and try to type out your full name. Go as slow as you need to. Repeat this exercise until you can identify every key by touch. Touch typing is the foundation of speed.
Switch to DVORAK. Like most people I use the QWERTY keyboard setup, but this setup is actually designed to slow down typing (it goes back to the days of typewriters). DVORAK is meant to be the fastest keyboard layout to use and if you’re serious about typing fast you should definitely look into it. Some people claim making the switch doesn’t make a huge difference, but at the very least your fingers will be moving less and therefore less likely to strain.
Use the DAS Keyboard Ultimate. Whilst it’s not available as a DVORAK keyboard, this is still a pretty nice looking piece of hardware. It claims to be the best keyboard for typing, which is obviously debatable, but the cool thing is, the keys aren’t labelled. They’re all just flat, black surfaces. This means you’re forced to memorise the location of keys.
Play the piano. One of the first instruments I learned to play was the piano. I was never particularly brilliant at it, but the skills required are similar to that of typing on a computer keyboard: speed, accuracy and finding the location of keys. Sure, the most “pure” type of practice will be with a computer keyboard, but playing the piano will less likely induce boredom.
Have something to type. The only times I type slowly are when I’m trying to tackle writer’s block. It’s my brain that’s moving slowly, not my fingers. Have something clear in your mind that you want to type before trying to clear 100+ words per minute.
Beware of traditional typing tests. Tests that determine your typing speed have a major flaw: they require you to read. I’m certainly no speed reader, but I’m not slow either, yet it still takes me a second to “process” the sentences I read in a typing test, and then I have to regurgitate them on the keyboard.
Typing tests 2.0. Back in high school, we’d occasionally be in the library where our teacher would dictate information we had to type into a Word document. I found this to be the best typing test available. There’s little thought required and, unlike in a traditional typing test, your thoughts aren’t jumping ahead to the words you have to write in the future (because you don’t know what they are). It’s a very “in the moment” test of typing speed.
Practice with substance. Don’t try to improve your typing speed by typing out some lame sentence over and over again. Start a blog or novel that makes typing both interesting and engaging. There’s no single moment where I thought “wow, I can type fast!” I was simply always typing something that I found interesting and my speed progressed naturally.
You don’t need to follow conventions. In primary school there was a chart on the wall that displayed where you should place your fingers on the keyboard. I ignored it. Whilst I’m sure these diagrams have value, I feel it’s best to just do what feels natural. If typing doesn’t feel natural for you at all then maybe use these types of diagrams as a starting point, but don’t feel constricted by them.
Thanks to David for his tips above. I was, or course, both appreciative and honored that Das Keyboard made it in as number 3. But this also got me thinking; how many other tips are out there for improving your typing speed? So I wanted to ask you; what tips or tricks have you learned and/or used to increase your typing speed? Have you been able to get it over 100 WPM?

10. Position : Choose a comfortable chair and sit straight. Place your fingers correctly on the keyboard. Type using the pads of your fingers, don’t use finger tips or nails. The Keyboard should be at waist level approximately.
